Alicia Keys joined Stevie Wonder on stage near the end of 2012 Billboard Music Awards. She made a duet with the music veteran, who played a piano, in a medley performance of his singles “Higher Ground” and “Overjoyed”.
“I’m here tonight to say, ‘Thank you, Stevie. Thank you for bringing our world so much wonder. Thank you for bringing us so much joy. Thank you for bringing us all so much soul’,” she said when introducing Stevie at the beginning of the segment.
She then presented him with Billboard Music Icon Award. When he accepted the award, he requested her to sing “Empire State of Mind” and she did it to a loud applause. “I wanted to say to all of you – Alicia, all who are watching – my fans, family, friends and loved ones, musician friends, every single person,” he said in his speech.
“This really belongs to you and most of all, it belongs to almighty god because all of it is possible for me because my prayers came true. So I must also say to all of you, we are in a place in life where we have to commit ourselves to one thing, and that is to love. I truly believe that love always will rule over hate, and peace over war.”
“I do believe that, and I feel that we are approximately 7 billion people in the world, and I’d like for all of us today – including you – to commit yourself today to using your heart and putting your best love forward. Not only that, committing yourself, coming together to change the world by being as one. Please!”
