The album will also be available as a CD/DVD, which includes stunning videos of Houston’s most unforgettable performances, reinforcing her as one of the greatest vocalists of all time. Both the audio and visual content have undergone state-of-the-art restoration and remastering.
Whitney Houston Live: Her Greatest Performances will take listeners through the remarkable arc of Houston’s career, from her national network television debut appearance on The Merv Griffin Show in 1983 as a prodigious teenager, where she sang “Home” from The Wiz, to her emotional 2009 performance of “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
The producer of the CD and the DVD is the five-time Grammy-award winner Clive Davis. Mr. Davis states, “Whitney’s Live CD/DVD will stun everyone. It definitely shows why she was totally unique, absolutely in the first rank of all time. For me, it’s been very emotional. The set vividly confirms that there really was no one like her. VH1: Los Angeles, CA — Building on the ratings success of last year’s “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story,” VH1 has green lit its next scripted movie, “Drumline: A New Beat” (tentative title). Entertainer and producer Nick Cannon joins movie producers Wendy Finerman, Jody Gerson and Dallas Austin, producers of the original Drumline feature film from Fox 2000, as executive producers on the project. Cannon also will appear in the movie, which is being penned by Regina Hicks and Karin Gist. Principal photography will begin in the spring, targeting a Fall 2014 premiere. The movie is produced by VH1 in partnership with Fox Television Studios.
“Drumline: A New Beat” will eschew a sequel format, instead focusing on a new set of characters at a fictional New Orleans university. The story follows Danielle (Dani) Bolton, an upper class Brooklyn girl who defies her parents in order to attend a college in Louisiana so she can join – and revitalize – their once-prominent drumline. Dani’s quest to become the first female section leader of the drumline in the school’s history will be hampered by upperclassmen (including her cousin, Tyree), her feelings for fellow band mate and rival, Jayven, and the school’s crosstown rivals.
“DRUMLINE was not just a successful film; it was a cultural happening,” says Nick Cannon. “Even though it was released over a decade ago, I am constantly approached by people on the street who tell me how much of an impact it made on them. As a producer, my thought was, ‘How do we create an updated version that would translate to today’s audience and still feel fresh and original?’ Adding a female lead character really makes sense and VH1 is the perfect network to partner with on this modernized take on what is considered a unique and classic film experience. ”
“’Drumline’ has become one of those beloved cornerstone films for a generation, always generating high ratings when we air it on VH1,” said Susan Levison, Executive Vice President of Original Programming & Production, VH1. “We’re beyond excited to revisit that ‘Drumline’ magic with Nick Cannon, Wendy Finerman, Dallas Austin and Jody Gerson to create a film that features a strong, relatable storyline, great music and a little nostalgia — all of which viewers have come to expect from a VH1 original movie.”
“Drumline: A New Beat” is the latest project fueling VH1’s successful momentum into the scripted arena. VH1 delivered the highest-rated original cable movie of 2013 among adults 18-49 with “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story.” 4.5 million total viewers tuned in for its October 21 premiere, which earned a 2.9 rating in the A18-49 demo and scored as the most-tweeted TV topic that day, generating over 2 million tweets. VH1 also had the highest-rated new scripted cable series last summer in the adult 18-49 demo with its freshman series “Hit The Floor.” VH1 has carried that ratings success into 2014 with the third season premiere of “Single Ladies,” which ranked first in its time period among non-sports cable networks with adults 18-49, women 18-49 and women 18-34.
In addition to Nick Cannon, Wendy Finerman, Jody Gerson, and Dallas Austin, “Drumline: A New Beat,” will be executive produced by Maggie Malina and Michael Goldman. Susan Levison and Jill Holmes will executive produce for VH1.
The driver of the Wal-Mart truck that crashed into Tracy Morgan’s limousine van June 7, killing one passenger and critically injuring the comedian and two others, had been driving for almost 10 hours and was going 65 mph in a 45-mph speed zone just before the crash, according to federal investigators.
“A preliminary review of the data showed that the (truck) was traveling at 65 mph for the 60 seconds preceding the collision with the Mercedes-Benz limo van,” the National Transportation Safety Board says in a preliminary report on the crash. “NTSB investigators are correlating these data with the physical evidence.”
The truck driver, Kevin Roper, has been charged with vehicular homicide and assault. He has pleaded not guilty. Morgan’s condition was upgraded to fair this week.
The preliminary report says that electronic log data show that Roper “had logged 9 hours 37 minutes of driving time when the crash occurred. With respect to the maximum 14-hour consecutive duty period for commercial motor vehicle drivers, the driver had logged 13 hours 32 minutes at the time of the collision.”
NTSB’s preliminary report says that the speed limit on the New Jersey Turnpike where the crash happened had been lowered from 55 mph to 45 mph because of construction work. The crash came as Congress considers rolling back tightened federal restrictions on hours-of-service and rest rules for commercial truckers.

Essence magazine invited the biggest stars to celebrate the success of black cinema on the cover of their March 2014 collector’s issue. Oprah Winfrey, Forest Whitaker, Michael B. Jordan and Chiwetel Ejiofor are all featured on the cover of the special edition issue. It is released on the heels of Vanity Fair’s very own Hollywood issue, which included six black actors – including Jordan and Ejiofor – on its cover for the first time in 20 years.
In Essence, readers learn more about the major roles these actors played on the big screen and discover some of the challenges they faced along the way. Winfrey returned to acting for her first time in 15 years as Gloria Gaines in Lee Daniels’ The Butler – a role her acting coach told her required her to be more sexy.
“”I don’t think of myself as being sexy and I’m not even sure how one is sexy,” she admits. Her acting coach instructed her: “Every time Gloria walks, pretend that she has a tail. And when Gloria sits down, she doesn’t sit without making sure there’s room for her tail.”
As for Ejiofor, the British actor is nominated for an Academy Award for his role in 12 Years a Slave. But while his delivery onscreen was powerful and moving, he admits that taking on that role was emotionally draining. According to Essence, he said it was walking the “fine line in between sanity and insanity.” “Even though there were emotional moments to shoot, overall I think every member of the cast and crew was there for one reason: They felt it was a tale that deserved to be told,” he added.
The special edition issue also features the 75 movers and shakers in the film industry right now – including a photo shoot with new Hollywood “It” girl Lupita Nyong’o.
The March issue of Essence is on newsstands February 10.
