“I’m going to come in and guest star as Tyler’s mom,” said busy actress Vanessa Bell Calloway (Crimson Tide, Lakeview Terrace) about her upcoming role in the NBC series “Go On” starring Matthew Perry (“Friends”), John Cho (“Star Trek”) and Tyler James Williams (“Everybody Hates Chris”). “We start tapping in October.”
Tyler plays Owens who, after a family tragedy, joins a grief counseling support group where Ryan (Perry) is a member and helps to draw him out of his shell. “Go On” is a comedy where Perry plays a head-strong sportscaster (Perry) dealing with the loss of his wife. The series airs on Tuesdays at 9/8c on NBC.
“When they write somebody like a mother of a kid in a series that’s a regular…you don’t know…,” Calloway said about recurring roles. “When you come if you don’t handle your business they can write you out…tell the story line through other characters.”
Well, Vanessa must have handled her busy because not only has she been asked back, but she will also be guest starring on the new Showtime series, “Shameless,” starring William H. Macy.
“Every year it’s highs and lows. Some years’ projects are spacey…and it looks like you’re not working,” Vanessa informed me. “I’ve been working a lot!”
Also a dancer Calloway explains that she also co-stars in the Russ Parr film The Under Shepherd, starring Isaiah Washington, Malinda Williams, Clifton Powell and Elise Neal, which was filmed four years ago and just now being released. She also appears in The Last Fall, a HBO Best Feature Film Award winning movie starring Lance Gross, Nicole Beharie and Obba Babatunde’ – a coming of age sports drama. Vanessa can also be seen in the feature film The Obama Effect. The Obama Effect also includes veteran actor Glynn Turman, Charles S. Dutton, Katt Williams and boxing great Zab Judah.

Here’s a project I’ve long forgotten about, since we first wrote about it in 2009! So, we’re talking 3 years ago. And since then, nothing’s been written about it on this site because, well, nothing about it has come our way… until today!
First a quick recap…
It’s titled The Obama Effect, directed by Charles S. Dutton (he also stars it by the way), Vanessa Bell Calloway, Katt Williams, Megan Good, and Glynn Turman.
At the time of that 2009 post, what we knew about the film, which Dutton also co-wrote, was that it would follow 3 diverse families with different points of view during the 2008 presidential race that would elect Barack Obama as president of the USA.
Here’s the official synopsis I received from PR firm The Kartel Company who are now repping the film:
The Obama Effect is a dramedy about John Thomas (Charles S. Dutton), an insurance salesman, who suddenly takes an overwhelming interest in the 2008 Obama campaign after a serious health scare changes his view on life. The movie follows the Thomas family, friends and foes through this historic time in American history.
In an interview Turman did in 2009, he said that this is one film that’s going to blow our minds! Although he didn’t elaborate.
I’m told that it will be release exclusively through AMC theaters (likely the AMC Independent program) on July 13th, 2012 in select markets including: Little Rock, Charlotte, Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington DC, Orlando, Jackson, Dallas, Houston, Detroit and Norfolk.
The project now has a Facebook page, and Twitter (@theobamaeffect).
I was able to dig up this trailer from October 2011, so there will probably be something new recut for this upcoming release
The Ringer season finale is upon us.
Vanessa Bell Calloway has been tapped to guest-star in the freshman series’ closer, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively. The Coming to America actress will play Special Agent Berens, the Regional Director of the FBI who shows leniency to Agent Machado (Nestor Carbonell).
